PRESENTED THE XXIV EDITION OF GAMES OF THE CALVIÀ ISLANDS – MALLORCA 20/22

The XXIV edition of the Jeux des Îles Calvià – Mallorca 20/22, which will take place between 24 and 29 May in different sports facilities in the municipality of Calvià, has been presented at the Magaluf Athletics track.

Jeux des Îles is a five-day international sports competition with thirteen sports (athletics, basketball, football, gymnastics, judo, karate, handball, swimming, tennis, table tennis, triathlon, sailing and volleyball) in which islands participate or archipelagos of Europe (Azores, Corsica, Malta, Martinique, Sicily, Guyana, Ischia and the Balearic Islands) with U-16 athletes, and which this year highlights the return to the games of the delegation of the Canary Islands.

Calvià City Council contributes to the celebration of the event by facilitating its sports facilities. This edition was scheduled for 2020, but was postponed due to covid-19. It should be noted that participation will be higher than initially expected by the organization, which shows that sporting competition returns strongly after the forced shutdown due to the pandemic. About 850 people are expected to arrive in the town, including athletes, relatives and technical teams.

The Jeux des Îles stands out for having a differentiating character in terms of promoting the sporting values of cordiality and ‘fair play’, while also promoting social inclusion through sport. It also focuses on an environmental vision in different aspects, for example avoiding single-use water bottles, prioritizing local consumption over low prices, and placing athletes in hotels within a radius of less than 10 km from sports facilities to avoid unnecessary transport.

The celebration of this edition of the Jeux des Îles in Calvià is another example of the City Council’s commitment to continue promoting sport as a tool for tourist deseasonalisation. Also, through the increase in the links between sport and tourism, it is intended to continue to add value to the destination as part of the goal of tourist conversion in the area.

The presentation was attended by the President of the Local Organizing Committee and a founding member of COJI, Marcel • li Got; the Deputy Mayor for Sports of the City Council, Eva Serra; and the manager of the Foundation for Sport of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Pere Joan March Ballester. Also in attendance were sports federations that provide support for the event, as well as representatives of sponsors.
